"...Melting Pot..."

What you get here are three albums by Jamaica's much-loved crossover crew THE CHOSEN FEW issued on England's mighty Trojan Records between 1973, 1975 and 1976. The first two were DERRICK HARRIOTT Productions with the legendary DJ and Producer KING SPORTY taking them to the next Miami Sound level for platter No. 3.

Coming on like a sort of dandily dressed Detroit Spinners - musically the band were not your Traditional Reggae or Ska outfit but more a sophisticated Chi-Lites meets The Stylistics by way of Jamaica. This is high falsetto-vocals mainstream Reggae with a dollop of drama-driven Soul thrown in from one of the island's most popular Vocal Groups.

Their British debut LP "Hit After Hit" from 1973 is new to digital, the other two are mid-Seventies rarities seldom seen on CD - whilst the 11 Bonus Tracks include rare Bunny Brown and Lloyd Charmers 45s on Song Bird and Duke Records, pumping up proceedings to a whopping 44-tracks in total. The group included Franklyn Spence and three brothers – Noel, Busty and Errol Brown. Given the lung-prowess of the four especially with Noel Brown on Lead – the effeminate vocals often featured two or even all of the boys - and by the time they were into 1976 – American Miami Funk had entered into the equation too. Let's get to the musical melting pot...

Tracks 13 and 17 in July 1976 as the A&B-sides of Miami MIA 401
Tracks 17 (as Funky Butter) and 16 in January 1974 as the A&B-sides of Action ACT 4623
The other six are exclusive to the LP

The 16-page booklet is the usual jam-packed Doctor Bird affair – new and deeply in-depth liner notes from HARRY HACKS sided with pages of rare Jamaican and British 45s, trade adverts, reviews, gig showcases in the press and even full page shots of Trojan Master Tape Boxes. You get to see in colour all those Song Bird, Trojan and Duke 45 labels as well as the lesser spotted Move & Groove, Micron and Crystal designs from Jamaica. They have even found an advert for Wincarnis Tonic Wine that feature our heroes giving it some fluffy clobber dance poses circa the Hit After Hit album (1973).

The audio is courtesy of one of my fave rave Remaster Engineers – England’s ANDY PEARCE who along with MATT WORTHAM has transferred these. The albums were all well recorded – so the bass and drum whacks are impressive and powerful as they pour out of your speakers. It’s only when you get to the 1970 and 1971 single sides that the audio drops but again given their vintage – it’s still more than acceptable. By the time we are playing 1976 – you may as well be listening to quality recorded Soul and Funk meets Reggae.

Alongside Errol and Bunny Brown originals - The Chosen Few touched on tunes made famous by many other contemporaries – especially Soul acts like Isaac Hayes on Stax ("Shaft" and "Do Your Thing"), Thom Bell and The Stylistics on Avco ("People Make The World Go Round", "You Are Everything" and "Stoned In Love"), The Main Ingredient on RCA Victor ("Everybody Plays The Fool"), Smokey Robinson and The Miracles on Motown ("I Second That Emotion" and "Tears Of A Clown"), Kool & The Gang on De-Lite ("Funky Stuff"), Curtis Mayfield on Curtom ("Queen Majesty") and Billy Paul on Philadelphia International ("Am I Black Enough For You?").

They went back to The Drifters on Atlantic for "Mexican Divorce", caught the beauty in Mentor Williams on Decca and his fabulous gimme de music so I can "Drift Away" tune too. Rock artists like Carole King and Elton John had covers of "It's Too Late" and "Daniel" whilst Blue Mink and their huge hit "Melting Pot" got thoroughly mashed-up. Even Acker Bilk is almost unrecognisable with fantastically fuzzed-up Funk guitars on his signature ballad "Stranger On The Shore" – a track that surely rates as one of the most inventive covers I've ever heard from the period.
In fact by the time we get to 1975 and 1976 - Soul Music and American Funk was never far from The Chosen Few camp - KC & The Sunshine Band backing up recordings for the "I Love The Way You Love" LP sessions that eventually came out as "Everybody Plays The Fool".

Producer and mentor King Sporty (married to Betty Wright of "Clean Up Woman" fame on Alston Records) kept them current with stuff like "Funky Buttercup" and sexy originals in the shape of "I Am A Man" and "Wandering". In fact reviews often referred to the "...In Miami" set from 1976 more as a 'funky' LP rather than Reggae - a hybrid of genres from a classy combo.

This is a superb little release from Doctor Bird – a reissue label that I look forward to. And with the upgraded audio, recommended to those who dig their Reggae with a slice of Soul...

"...These Sounds...Leads The Way..."

Doctor Bird Records of the UK (part of Cherry Red) continue their stunning reissue series of all things Trojan Records and affiliated – making available again in 2020 the early releases of Trojan's much-loved 'TTL' Reggae, Rock Steady and Ska LP series issued in bulk between 1969 and 1970 (14 schillings and six old pence to you and I, back in the Brixton Cat days). This time we get two early 1970 UK debut albums from Jamaican Producer, Singer and Player CLANCY ECCLES and his band THE DYNAMITES – the Eccles solo set "Freedom" being new to CD.

Eccles was 29 years old in December 1969 and had already been playing music for a decade, his huge hits on Coxsone and (Nu) New Beat Records back home stretching back as far as the beginning of the Sixties. In fact the early 1970 British debut album "Freedom" (TTL 22) with that famous shot of him riding a motorbike through the Island scrubs had only one new recording on it - itself an update of his 1961 45-classic "Freedom" originally issued on Coxsone Records in Jamaica. The other eleven cuts were largely successful 7" singles A and B-sides ranging from 1967, 1968 and 1969 - so the album was a mop-up greatest hits set of sorts (see detailed list below for catalogue numbers and release dates). The 12-Track Dynamites debut offered four previously released sevens nestling alongside eight new exclusive tracks. Both have been in the Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide for years at hefty sums – original vinyl copies in better than VG grade - particularly difficult to find.

Trojan allocated 'Clandisc Records' to all Clancy-related output - the LP sleeves displaying the Trojan Logo and catalogue number but the labels actually being Clandisc (issues for this label ranged between October 1969 and October 1972). And as if these two rare LPs weren't enough, Doctor Bird amps up this 2CD set with a whopping 26 more Period Bonuses including Previously Unreleased and Six Jamaican Tracks/Singles not originally available in the UK – all of it Remastered by a fave Audio Engineer of mine – Andy Pearce (uncredited). There is a bike-shop of parts to wade through, so once more let's get Fattie Fattie with Auntie Lulu (if you know what I'm saying)...

25. Dance Beat (Version III) by Clancy Eccles and King Stitt (Not originally released in the UK)

The 16-page booklet is the usual feast of info and visuals - a wall of those Jamaican New Beat 45s you just don't see at any record fair - the lovely colour artwork for both British albums – black label repros of The Dynamites LP – a German 45 pic sleeve on Fontana for "Fattie Fattie" with "Last Call" by the Silver Stars on the flipside (although it actually plays "Tribute To Drumbago" by The Dynamites) - a page of nine UK 45s on Duke, Clandisc and Trojan - trade adverts and LP reviews for the "Freedom" LP and Discography info on all 50 songs (some of which I've corrected above).

TONY ROUNCE - long-time associate writer for Ace Records - has handled the liner notes and does a typically bang-up job - for instance highlighting that "John Public" is in fact a remake of the African instrumental "Tom Hark" and that "Say What You Say" on Side 2 of The Dynamites album features the organ-keyboard prowess of Winston 'Brubeck' Wright. He points out that ace Saxophonist Val Bennett is here too on many tracks. An unsung hero of the scene, Val contributed to one of the most beloved British instrumental hits of the late 1969 period - the no. 5 placed "Return Of Django" by The Upsetters - a Lee Perry song and a true highlight on the November 1969 "Tighten Up Volume 2" compilation LP (that album also featured Clancy’s "Fattie Fattie"). The Audio as you can imagine fluctuates wildly from shockingly good to more than acceptable (this is late Sixties Reggae and Rock Steady after all) - but as its Andy's careful transfers – each listen always feels like an upgrade to me. To the music...

No more sighing, no more crying, go home to my father and be free – Clancy sings as he rides his motorbike across the fields of his beloved country and opens his debut album account with a 1969 remake of "Freedom". We slip back to 1967 for "What Will Your Mother Say" (Clancy and his gal are in love) while that organ sound on "The World Needs Loving" is fantastically clear and present. Other faves include the cool of "Dollar Train", the long-to-hear those joy-bells ringing of "Shu Be Du", the fruitily witty "Auntie Lulu", the weight-busting shuffle of "Fattie Fattie" (dig those girl singers) and the ‘we want to go back home’ of "Mount Zion" that closes out the album – an LP that doesn’t feel like a clump of 45s bunged together hoping to be coherent.

If I’m honest, as much as I like the parent album, the Bonus Cuts on CD1 and CD2 are fabulous stuff – the reggae until morning comes of "Deacon Don", the don’t you brag and don’t you boast and stop acting like a "Bag-A-Boo", the hold me close duet vocal smooch of "Oh My Lover" (dig those guitar changes) – very cool stuff and sounding toppermost.

Most folks will know the shouting swing-with-me song "Fire Corner" by The Dynamites from the "Tighten Up Volume 2" compilation - that wicked organ fill jumping out of your speakers as the tune makes your feet shuffle like a man in need of a penny. Other goodies include the echoed organ chugging instrumental "I Did It" with its irresistible neck-jerking rhythm and the this-is-mad call to arms that is "Vigorton 2" again with fantastic soloing from Winston Wright. And on it goes with heaps more where that came from.

Doctor Bird Records are in their third year of releases (since 2018) that frankly bring a wee tear to my aging myopia (this is their fiftieth title with many more to come). Long may the freedom train keep firing up like this...

"...Food Of Love..."

I've been raving for some time now about how good these Doctor Bird CD Reissues are and DBCDD-039 is another belter.

Listed in Record Collector Price Guides at between £150 to £200 for an original British-pressed LP in Mono (that sum in no way reflects just how rare and desirable this fab album is) – this massively expanded 2CD reissue is centered around his second album outing - the 1968 Island Records 12-track LP "Derrick Morgan And His Friends" as pictured on the cover.

With a whopping 24 Bonus Tracks on top of the 12-track album - many rare Island and Unity single-sides from the spring of 1968 make their digital debut here. And along with a seminal genre album that has been off-radar for over 52 years, you even get a few Previously Unreleased Tracks too. There's a lotta Rock Steady to get steady to, so let's have at it...

Compiled by Reggae and Ska historian and aficionado LAURENCE CANE-HONEYSETT (Author of "Young Gifted And Black: The Story Of Trojan Records" – see my Review) – the 16-page booklet offers up two pages of those uber-rare single labels (nine on each) – Island, Unity, Morgan's own Hop Records, Jamaican white labels as well as black and white snaps on DM in his trademark Pork Pie hat. There are interviews conducted across the decades with the great man that include contributions from Bunny Lee. The distinctive orange and black eye Island Records label for "Derrick Morgan And Friends" is repro'd on Page 7 while the album's rear sleeve (advertising all those tasty 1967 impossible to find Island and Sue LPs) is on the last page of the booklet.

You get track by track credits and mastering is by one of my fave Audio Engineers – ANDY PEARCE – a name Universal has used for Budgie, Free, Rory Gallagher, ELP, Spooky Tooth, Wishbone Ash and loads of these difficult to get right Reggae compilations (him and his audio partner Matt Wortham have mastered over 50 of these sets so they know their way around a few tape boxes and vinyl dubs). Given the recordings vintage and notorious made-in-a-bucket origins – the audio here is once again kicking. I'll never be able to afford these sevens or the LP and to have it here in such cool Audio is – well, cool. To the music...

Unusual for the time, all 12 tracks on the LP were not singles and their flipsides, but exclusive to it. That irresistible chug-rhythms kick in straight away with "Bad Luck On Me" - will someone hear my plea - Derrick asks - yes we will mate. "Tears On My Pillow" would be covered by so many - here its simple Rock Steady beat also features a neat guitar solo. There's a new bird across the street that's making Derrick take notice in "Ain't That Crazy" while he riles against stupidity in local youths in "Lagga Head". Other faves on the album are "Stop The Wedding" where Pauline Morgan sounds like Reggae Girl Group and the fantastic vocalist in The Consumates commenting on greed with "The More They Get".

Island Records enthusiasts will look down those WI catalogue numbers and beam. Derrick's "Conquering Ruler" starts a run of ten rarities - each with that identikit chug-rhythm. Highlights include the mind your "Lip & Tongue" walkie-talkie song by The Viceroys, the soft and pretty "I'm Indebted" by Alva Lewis and "Family War" by Neremiah Reid - a co-write between Derrick and Duke Reid. CD2 opens with a 1968 version of "Gimme Back" while Neremiah Reid tackles another co-write with Duke on the "Give Me That Love" love song. Of the songs not previously released in the UK - "A Prisoner In Love" feels like a real find (lovely audio). This is no time to relax Derrick demands in the rather cool "Bedweight". And on it goes...

For sure hearing 36 songs with essentially the same Rock Steady rhythms and sound can be trying after a while, but this is a typically great Doctor Bird reissue - making available once again music that shouldn't be condemned to the Brixton Market of over 50 years ago. Big red bum ball and a smile...

"...Rightful Ruler..."

In the world of Reggae (especially Jamaican Reggae) – two names elicit a certain knee-trembling excitement amidst arthritic old-fart collectors like me. And this fabulous April 2019 Doctor Bird Records 2CD reissue out of the UK offers up truck loads of both – the magical Pama Records label - and the wonder-kid Producer and Arranger, the rightful ruler himself - Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The 12-page booklet is the usual feast of memorabilia - the Side 1 and 2 labels of the two rare LPs on Pama and Pama Economy are pictured on Page 2 (not things you see every day of the week). There are black and white photos dotted throughout the text of key players like Eric Morris, The Inspirations, Lee Perry with The Pioneers, Eric Donaldson and of course LP himself. You get two full-page displays of those gorgeous Punch, Camel, Doctor Bird and Gas Records single labels (nine to each page) – British-pressed 45 rarities with their mottled punch-hold centres that are so hard to find. DAVID KATZ provides the superb liner notes – deep level info on both albums and the manic two years that surrounded them, Lee Perry’s early career of brilliance, legacy and so on. And finally there is an advert on the rear inlay of some of the DB releases mentioned in my list below.

New mastering comes by way of my fave Engineer ANDY PEARCE – a gent with a huge Rock catalogue to his name and now, a huge spread of these new Trojan and related releases as well. But even with the best will in the world, almost all of this was recorded in Aunty Flo's Bargain Bucket Basement Studio for three schillings and no pence when there wasn't an electricity-black-out. Anyone expecting Audio miracles can look elsewhere - but given that - when the volume knob goes up - the power and sheer atmosphere of this infectious music is both cool and fabulous. For sure, the audio here is not anything like the whack a body gets off the original British-pressed 45s, and some titles are so rare there are no tapes and the notes admit vinyl dubs, but even then – this is the best I've ever heard these recordings sound. You may to adjust your Supertramp expectations down to 2 on a scale of 10 – but these rarities have been sympathetically handled by a label that gives a monkeys. To the aces and the braces...

Turning up sometime in late 1969 - the Mono "Clint Eastwood" album features 10 singles from Pama's subsidiary labels Punch, Camel and Gas with two newbees tagged on, one to each side. And like Trojan's popular LP "Return Of Django" - Pama's album title was blatantly tapping into the Sergio Leone spaghetti western film craze taking cinemas by storm (Lee calling Mister Eastwood his favourite cowboy). Perry's rhythm section (also known as The Hippy Boys) consisted for the most part of Glen Adams and Alva 'Reggie' Lewis on Organ, Guitar and Vocals with Bassist Aston 'Family Man Barrett and his Brother/Drummer Carlton Barrett. Side 1's opener "Return Of The Ugly" gives us the familiar Skinhead rhythms - an organ shuffling alongside a vocalist giving it some "...ah ha..." every few seconds. We're helpfully informed on the next Upsetters cut that for a few dollars more we can be lying on the floor (how very thoughtful of them), while Dave Barker has a seriously good stab at cult Soul Vocalist on his "Prisoner Of Love" - a commercial slice of wickedness that should have broken through to the Pop charts. U Roy and Peter Tosh lend Tribe of Juddah vocals to "Rightful Ruler" but my fave cuts are the vocally-sporadic instrumentals "My Mob" and "Dry Acid" - driving organ dancers - the former with Bad Manners type 'pick it up, pick it up' scat vocals.

Of the exclusive LP cuts, Winston Holness's "Ain't No Love" turns out to be a reggae slant on the Eddie Floyd Stax Records classic "I've Never Found A Girl (That Loves Me Like You Do)" that does the original proud. But again (as with so many of these chocker 2CD sets) - the Bonuses from 13 to 24 are shockingly good and I'd argue a better LP that the issued one. The "Love Me Two Times" Top A&B-side Single Award goes to Eric Donaldson's sweet vocals fronting The West Indians on their "Strange Whisperings" b/w a very cool cover of Otis Redding's sure "Hard To Handle" on the flip-side by Carl Dawkins (Camel Records CA 16 from 1969). Disc 2 simply coughs up a further hour and a bit of the same feel-the-spirit Reggae and Ska and many in Stereo - sweet.

I'm eating up these Doctor Bird 2CD reminders (as I’m sure other fans are too) and this is easily another winner/reissue of the year. Recommended big time...
